Lessons from Mother and Daughter

Let your children facilitate through you. I had to trust that my daughter had to guide me on this trip.
Alisha and Aisha

Sitting in the garden of my hotel in Kathmandu, I eavesdrop on a conversation being had between two clients and a Nepali guide. What impresses me is the tone of the conversation. I have unfortunately witnessed all too many Westerners talking down or being condescending towards their guides and porters. What really touched me was not only the tone of respect that I heard between these people, but that the conversation was being led by the youngest member of the group – Asha (22). She put across her opinions in a clear, concise and conscious way that made her guide understand the area’s she wished to be approved upon for their next trek.

Afterwards, I asked both mother and daughter what it was that lay behind the success of their partnership? How did the mother let her daughter take charge? Secondly, why lay behind the respect in the daughter for her mother?

(Mother) Alisha: It’s been a revelation to see her (Asha) power and strength on this trip. I am so proud of her. This trip has hallmarked our relationship. It’s the first time we have had adult time to connect. As a mother, I really appreciate that.

(Daughter) Asha: It’s also important to remember that your parents are people too. They are allowed to make mistakes. It’s all good. I appreciate this opportunity to get away from the noise of everyday life.

  1. I’m sure it’s been a fantastic environment connecting and cementing your friendship and relationship as a mother and daughter. It’s refreshing to see the relationship blossom and I am sure will continue to do so. It’s the best thing that’s happened. So proud of both of you. Love you both.
